Musical Perspectives with a Philosophical Spin: 🎶 On Mozart's “Second Naivité” 🎶 Delving into musicologist Alfred Einstein’s (photo) groundbreaking work on Mozart, the concept of “second naïveté” gives us an insightful perspective on Mozart’s later compositions. What is the connection between the Little Mermaid and Arnold Schönberg's music? 🧜🏼♀️🎶💙 In 1920, Schönberg initially began composing his Five Piano Pieces op. 23 as a tribute to Claude Debussy for a memorial album. However, it wasn't until 1923 that he completed the pieces, this time as a standalone work commissioned by the music publisher Wilhelm Hansen in Copenhagen. This cycle marks a significant shift in Schönberg's musical style, as he moved from free atonal music to creating compositions based on tone rows. Although at this point, the tone rows did not necessarily include all twelve chromatic tones. * * * The Little Mermaid would certainly like No. 5 best, the famous "Waltz", an ironic play with genre traditions and at the same time a swift-moving piece of music! "Busoni was a titan", world-class pianist András Schiff once said – and we agree! Ferruccio Busoni grew up to become one very early on: he began composing at the age of seven and studying at the Vienna Conservatory at the age of nine. While his early work shows above all a romantic background, later Johann Sebastian Bach in particular influenced Busoni's pianistic and compositional-artistic development. In the Henle catalogue you will find some of his most wonderful Bach transcriptions!
