Credits

To purchase scores for the app visit the “Henle Store” which you can find at bottom centre of the home page. You must be online to do this.

Keep an eye out for promotions and special offers that we will occasionally send to you as a registered customer by e-mail. These can offer significant savings.

To directly purchase scores and the corresponding associated texts (preface, notes, footnotes, illustrations etc., › see here) you will need credits. You can purchase these conveniently at any time using our app. The larger the credit unit you purchase, the lower is the price per credit.

The credits are permanently added to your user account. Each time you purchase scores for your library the correspondingly displayed credit amount will be deducted from your balance › see here.

At bottom left of the app’s home page your account's credit balance is displayed in red. By tapping on

the home page of your personal Henle Library account is opened. Here, you can now purchase the desired number of new credits by tapping on the red “Purchase credits” field. You must be online to do this. The corresponding amount will be charged via your Apple or Google account and the new credits are immediately displayed in the app (you may have to restart the app):

Henle Store: finding scores

Go to the Henle Store home page (you must be online to shop). Here you will find the current range of products in the G. Henle Verlag digital Urtext catalogue.
There are various ways of finding the desired scores:

• By using the › search bar
• By › filtering
• By using the › suggested title function

 

Search bar

On the upper edge of the home page screen you will find the search bar

Enter the name of the composer and/or the title of the work, where appropriate with opus-number or catalogue raisonné number or instrumentation. For example, entering “Beethoven cello sonatas” displays both the cello sonatas edition (blue cover icon) as well as all 5 sonatas individually (white cover icon). You can make a more precise search by entering, for instance, “Beethoven cello sonata in A major”.

Caution: The search bar does not tolerate typing errors. For instance, entering “Bethoven” will not return any results.

If searching via the search bar returns too many results, then enter a further search term or set a › filter.

Should no results be displayed, please try again using alternative search terms in the search bar. If this still does not return any results it is quite possible that the title you are searching for is either not available at all from Henle – or is not yet available via the app at the time of your search. You can browse the app catalogue › here. Or you are welcome to send us an › e-mail if you require further clarification.

Irrespective of the string of letters you enter into the search bar, the app will identify whether there are one or more appropriate hits in the Henle app catalogue. The filters set by the app will be shaded in colour beneath the search bar once you have initiated the search. Depending upon the area in which this string of letters is found, the filter terms will be shaded in colour as follows:

Green = Name of composer,
red = instrumentation/orchestration term,
yellow = period term.

You can delete the filter terms that you have set either by tapping on the field shaded in colour or on “Clear all” at the right edge of the screen.

 

Filter/browse

Once you have entered a term into the › search bar the result list opens. If too many results are displayed you can narrow them down by setting filters. To narrow down your list of results tap on the word “Filter” to the right of the search bar using your finger or the iPencil. You will see four filter options:

• Composer (= sorted alphabetically: all available names)
• Instrumentation (= sorted systematically: all available instrumentations)
• Period (= sorted chronologically: all available musical periods)
• Degree of difficulty: The following repertoire has been completely classified in accordance with Henle levels of difficulty 1–9: piano solo, violin and piano, flute and piano. For a more detailed explanation of the levels see the Henle home page: “Level of difficulty”.

 

You can now select as many filters as you need. As an example: You have entered “Schumann” into the search box. Now go to “Filter” and narrow your search down to “Violin and piano” in the “Instrumentation” field, for instance (tap on it). The displayed results will be narrowed down to the two search terms. If, for example, you now want to know whether the returned search hits include one or more titles of difficulty level “2 – easy”, you can also set this filter by tapping on it. Because a corresponding title (“Schumann/violin and piano/2 – easy”) does not exist, no search hits are displayed (any longer) – but you will see that some results are actually returned under “4 – medium”.

You will also find the three primary filters “Composer”, “Instrumentation” and “Period” described above on the home page of the “Henle Store” – correspondingly shaded in colour – which you can use to rapidly achieve your objective. As soon as you tap on one of these large, coloured fields, the corresponding register will open which contains all of the available composer names or instrumentations or periods – i.e. those that deliver search hits. These registers are identical to the filters to the right of the search bar and which have already been described.

 

Suggested titles

We present selected digital Henle editions in the lower half of the “Henle Store” home page. The blue cover icons are always displayed, one cover per work (collection); see below. Be sure to take a look at these frequently, because the displayed editions change. We use the first carousel to show the latest title to be included in the app in chronological order; the first title in the series is therefore quasi the latest, the second was added to the library before that, etc. In the carousels below, we summarise works and groups of works that are particularly interesting for musicians in terms of making them aware of our current range of app titles and encouraging them to purchase. All of the rows can display a greater number of titles than initially shown on-screen; by swiping to the left you can view all of the information.

 

Individual pieces, collections. Scores, individual instrumental parts and combinations

Go to the Henle Store home page (you must be online to do this). Here you will find the current range of products in the G. Henle Verlag digital Urtext catalogue. › See here for instructions on how to find and select what you are looking for from this range.

In the “Henle Store” all works and work “collections” have a Henle-blue cover icon:

As soon as you tap on the cover of such a work with your finger (or iPencil) the page containing the corresponding product range opens.

For each product, you will find the cover icon of the product you have selected in the black area at the top, along with brief bibliographic information about the title to the right (composer/title/publisher’s name). Below this, in the central white field and to the left of the instrument name (in some cases with further bibliographic information), a small preview image of the score is displayed which shows the first music page in each case. Tapping on this preview image opens it, while tapping on the white “X” at the top left corner of the opened image closes it again. This preview image allows you to check that the product is actually the one you require.

Most individual titles are consolidated into a collection (blue cover icon) in the same way as the Henle print editions, but frequently also into a more comprehensive sales unit than the Henle print edition (e.g. Beethoven, all piano sonatas). However, they are also bundled into smaller and smallest units which we do not offer in printed form (e.g. Chopin, Études op. 10) or, if you once again tap on the corresponding blue cover, they are split into individual titles or individual movements (= white icon cover: e.g. Chopin, Étude op. 10,1):

 

This means that the Henle Library App consists of significantly more than 10,000 sales units containing some 1,000 collections.

For titles that are scored for multiple instruments you can furthermore select which part (which instrument) you wish to purchase.
Example: Beethoven, string quartet op. 59/1. In the top row of the central field you have the choice between five sales units: the score; violin 1; violin 2; viola; violoncello. The corresponding field shaded in blue (= part) is the sales unit you have currently selected. At the right edge of the screen you will find, shaded in red, the credits you need to purchase the product. You can also purchase each individual instrumental part in combination with the score. This will be displayed to you as a corresponding alternative below the offer for the individual instrumental part.

Beneath the respective product offers for a title or group of works you will find further, automatically-generated, offers for closely related titles (“related collections”). Tapping on one of the blue cover icons takes you to the products available for this title.

 

Special case: “solo concerto”

On the home page of the “Henle Store” you will find all of the concertos under the respective instrument (you must be online): “piano concertos”, “clarinet concertos”, “violin concertos”, etc.
The Henle Library App offers you the music scores for these concertos fundamentally in at least two output forms:
- Solo part (in the case of piano concertos this solo part is not available in the Henle print edition, only the digital edition!)
- Piano reduction (= piano reduction plus overlaid solo part).
Furthermore, we also offer a number of concertos as complete scores.

Choose the corresponding output forms for the selected concerto beneath the black title bar at the top. If you choose the solo part or the score you can purchase the piano reduction at the same time.
Provided that you have purchased the solo part plus the piano reduction, or the score in addition, you can subsequently and conveniently use all of the output forms in parallel and, by tapping between the different output forms, conveniently jump back and fore in a time-saving manner › see here.

 

My library

All of the digital sheet music editions purchased with › credits are permanently added to your library. When you tap with your finger or iPencil on the “My Library” field at the bottom of the screen (it is then shaded in blue) you will see a complete overview of the app titles you have purchased. The order in which the titles are displayed is based on your personal usage chronology (opening) of the titles, which is why the label here is "Last used”.

Should you wish to temporarily delete titles from your device memory (e.g. because too much storage capacity is being used), you can “delete” each individual title by rapidly dragging the corresponding row to the left. But there’s no need to worry, because the title is only removed from your device's storage and, of course, remains permanently available to you in the cloud. It is not possible to accidentally or purposefully permanently delete a title. You can identify which titles are stored in the cloud and which are stored on your device by the icons on the far right of each row: Cloud is represented by

and offline availability by

To restore a “deleted” title from the cloud to your device, thereby enabling you to use it again, tap on the cloud icon. Provided that you are online (= requirement) and depending upon the quality and stability of your network connection, the titles will be uploaded at differing speeds.

Tapping on the information icon – which displays offline availability – opens a small window with the basic bibliographic information on the publisher and Urtext edition, along with any available fingerings and, if applicable, the level of difficulty. Tapping on this icon once again closes this window.

You can also display your app titles in an order other than “Last used” namely either in alphabetical order by composer – to do this tap on “Composer” at the top of the screen beneath the search bar – or by instrumentation, using the same principle.

By tapping on the third “Playlists” field you can display the playlists you have created. You can find detailed instructions for creating and using › playlists.

The titles in “My Library” that you have purchased are displayed in rows in truncated form. Fundamentally, individual titles (the smallest unit) are displayed. You can identify this by the white cover icon at the beginning of each row. The truncated title always indicates the following information: (1st row) the name of the composer, (2nd row, in bold) the individual title, (3rd row) the affiliation of a title with a collection and (4th row) – in red – the specific instrument or score for this title.

In a comprehensive library it makes sense to be able to search for specific titles. To do this, use the search bar and the “filter” to its right at the top edge of the screen. Detailed instructions for using this powerful search/find function can be found › above.

Tapping on the truncated title row opens the scores (provided they are stored on the device for offline use; otherwise tapping triggers the download function (for this you must be online).

 

Less

Printing scores (this procedure is different for Android tablets)

If you wish to print out on paper a page, movement or the whole work from the digital Henle Library App, first go to the menu from any page of the piece. To do this you must tap your finger or iPencil in the centre of the score screen. In the menu, tap on the icon

Now tap on the printer icon:

in the last but one row. If you are using a more extensive file, e.g. a multi-movement work, it is recommended that you print out the file movement-by-movement (otherwise the print job may be cancelled or experience a marked slowdown). The window that now opens gives a warning of this situation. Therefore, as a precaution, select the bottom row, “Print movement” (= default setting, shaded in blue) and then choose the respective movement to be printed by tapping on the figure.

Start the print job by tapping “Print movement” (or “Print all”) with your finger (or iPencil). The device now switches to “Options” (see the heading of the window that opens). The device searches directly via WLAN for a suitable AirPrint-enabled printer. Caution: The printer must be turned on to enable the software to execute your print job. If a suitable printer cannot be found the print job cannot be executed and the process is cancelled. If it is necessary to restart the printer search you will find the message “Select printer >” in the first white-shaded row from the top. Once you tap this field with your finger the software will restart the printer search.

Once the iPad has located a suitable AirPrint-enabled printer for the print job, the print preview for the page(s) to be printed opens in the large lower field. All of those pages with a check mark in a blue circle (lower edge of the screen) are the ones to be printed. If you wish to exclude specific pages from being printed you can tap your finger on the blue circle to grey-out those pages you wish to exclude. (Tapping once again reselects the page ready for printing).

In the second white-shaded row from the top you can now enter the number of copies you wish to print for each of the page(s). The default setting is a single copy of each page (“1 copy”); by tapping on the plus or minus sign at the right edge of the row you can change the number of copies as you wish (the maximum number of copies per print job is 99).

In the third white-shaded row from the top the pending print job is displayed in detail. The information includes the pages to be printed (which you previously entered or limited using the blue circle at the bottom), whether one side of the page (= default) or both sides are to be printed, or whether printing will be in colour (default) or black & white. If you wish to change the presets (1 copy/which pages/colour/one-sided) tap on this third field. Here you can change or modify all four of the presets by tapping, as described above (you can specify whether to print on both sides or in black & white by tapping the button, which is then shaded in blue).

Now tap the blue “Print” label at top right and the print job will begin. The printout serves as a backup copy and is not a fully-featured replacement for the original Henle print edition. The correspondingly applicable © symbol and the e-mail address of the person printing appear on each printed page for identification purposes. The print quality is adequate, but is purposely far below that of an original Henle print edition.

 

Exporting and sharing scores as PDF files (this procedure is different for Android)

To export a Henle Library App digital sheet music edition as a PDF file, you must first proceed as if you wish to print. Perform all of the steps described above. However, instead of tapping on the blue “Print” icon to start the printout, hold two fingers (e.g. thumb and index finger) on the preview page and then move them apart to zoom the page out.
The pages defined for export as PDF files are now immediately available to you. On the right outer edge you will see an overview of all locally generated PDFs in the form of miniatures. By swiping downwards you can view all of the PDF pages and, if necessary, cancel the process and make a new selection by tapping “Done”. The PDFs to be exported are automatically given the file name “Henle scores” (see top row of screen, heading); this file name can be renamed on the target device.

You must then tap on the blue share icon:

at the upper edge of the screen. A selection of functions and programs to which the PDF file can be transferred now opens. Make your selection according to your needs and the process is completed.

 

Sharing audio recordings

How you can share your › recordings made using this app is explained in the chapter "Recording and Playing back" under “Sending”.

 

Less

Screen background

Go to any desired music page by tapping your finger (or the iPencil) on the basic settings icon of your app in the menu at top right: The “Score settings” menu opens with its options.

In the very first row you will find the icon

for switching the display background between white and light grey. Decide which presentation you prefer (this depends upon the lighting in the room where you are using the app). Tap on the white or grey field and the screen will slightly change its background hue (a check mark simultaneously shows the selection you have made).

 

Familiar print layout (Henle Urtext)

Go to any desired music page by tapping your finger (or the iPencil) on the basic settings icon of your app in the menu at top right: The “Score settings” menu opens with its options.

In the second row we offer a selection of two principal score layout settings. Either tap on “Printed layout” (this field is then shaded in blue) to display the selected piece of music with exactly the same number of staves in the same layout as you are familiar with in the printed Henle edition.

 

Custom layout

Or you can select the option of customising your individual layout settings; to do this, tap on the “Custom layout” field (which is then shaded in blue). Now the following setting options open in a pop-up window:

 

Modify layout

Using this function you can enlarge or reduce the white space to the right and left of the score by dragging/moving the 1st slider (= keep your finger/iPencil on the circle and drag it to the right or left); the overall score display then becomes correspondingly smaller or larger and correspondingly more or less staves will be displayed on the page.
Using the second slider, which is located beneath the first, you can reduce or enlarge the white space between the individual staves. The less white space, the more staves are displayed on the page.

 

No overlaid parts

When you activate the slider on the right by tapping it, all of the staves overlaid on a piano score will disappear (e.g. a piano trio: when activated the two string staves disappear, thereby displaying significantly more piano staves). Caution: When this function is activated it may also cause any written instructions (such as tempo indications) to disappear. By deactivating the slider (drag it to the left) the “hidden” staves immediately reappear.

 

Beginning of movement on new page

When you activate the slider on the right by tapping it, the program jumps to the beginning of the work (first page) and all of the subsequent movements of a multi-movement work will automatically begin at the top left of a new page (caution: the respective previous movement may end in the middle of the page). By deactivating the slider (drag it to the left) the original page break immediately reappears (the stave jumps back to the beginning of the work = first page).

 

Portrait or landscape format

By turning your device through 90 degrees the score is displayed either in portrait or landscape format. In landscape format the scores are displayed correspondingly larger, thereby reducing the number of staves displayed. In portrait format, on the other hand, the score display is slightly reduced in size compared with the print layout and more of the score can be displayed on the page overall.

In both formats (portrait/landscape) the display area for the music pages is always optimised for your output device.

 

Double page view

If you use your device in landscape mode and select the page layout “Custom layout ”, you can display two pages of music next to each other. To do so, you need to activate the slider next to the option “Double page view”.

Then you will always see two adjacent pages of music from the selected work next to one another. You can turn off this function by deactivating the slider (dragging it to the left).

Less

With your music page open, tap in the centre of the screen in order to switch to menu mode. Then tap on the fingering icon at top right.

If the title that you are currently using provides several alternative fingerings you will see the name(s) of the respective artist(s) whose fingerings/bowstroke notations we have included in our Urtext or have received specifically for this purpose.

Make your selection now and tap with your finger or iPencil on the corresponding name: The new fingering is immediately overlaid onto the whole of the music score.

If you tap “No fingerings” (this option is available for every title), the Urtext will be displayed with no fingerings or bowstroke notations.

We are continuously supplementing and expanding this option. All of the › alternative fingerings are always free of charge. This also includes fingerings added at a later time. If you have already purchased a title for which we offer a new fingering alternative, then this update will appear in “My Library” (home page; for this you must be online).

Tapping your finger on this icon starts the update (you must be online). In the “Henle Store” all alternative options are directly shown for the titles/parts by stating the name of the artist.

 

Less

Opening annotation mode (creating a layer/copy)

There are two options for marking up an open score with your own annotations – to do this you must first automatically create a duplicate (1:1 copy) of the score; the originally purchased digital Urtext thus always remains an unchanged original. You can open the respective tool by either:

• placing a finger (or iPencil) for a moment on the centre of the music page (tap and hold), or
• tapping on the pen icon in the menu bar at top right.

Naming/renaming the copy, creating a new copy, sending annotated copies, exiting annotation mode

As soon as you have opened the annotation mode the app creates a copy (a new “layer”) in the background, which is saved by the program under the name “user setup”, together with its date and time of creation. Your entire custom markup is now saved in this newly created copy. If you want to make annotations in a file other than this one, you must change the file (see below). The original text (“original scores”) remains unchanged, irrespective of how many such copies you create.

You can, of course, (re-)name the copies that you have created at any time. To do this, tap on the icon at top left while the annotation mode is still open.

The check mark, at the left side of the pop-up window that now opens, shows you the copy (“layer”) that is currently active. If you rapidly drag this row to the left using a finger (or iPencil), the grey “Rename” field will open. Once you have tapped on the “Rename” field the “Rename existing setup layer” pop-up window opens. Now enter your desired name/title for this copy (e.g. “Fingerings for Anna_01”) into the grey-shaded field. Tapping on the blue field completes this process.

You can, of course, also delete your own layers (but never the original file). To do this, tap on the icon at top right while the annotation mode is still open.

The check mark, at the left side of the pop-up window that now opens, shows you the layer that is currently active. If you rapidly drag this row to the left using a finger (or iPencil), the red “Delete” field will open. Once you have tapped on the “Delete” field this layer/copy is permanently deleted.

Using this app you can create, rename, send and delete as many (!) layers (= copies) of your original music scores as you wish. To create a new copy, tap on the icon at top left while the annotation mode is still open.

The check mark, at the left side of the pop-up window that now opens, shows you the copy (“layer”) that is currently active. Tap on exactly the file, of which you want to create a copy, in order to make changes to it. Then tap on the blue “Add new annotation layer” field. In a new pop-up window you will now be prompted to give the newly created copy a unique name/title (grey field). Enter the title of the copy here and then complete the process by tapping on the blue “Create” field.

You can send all of your individually annotated editing layers, among others as e-mail attachments or via AirDrop, for example to friends, colleagues or students. To do this, tap on the icon at top left while the annotation mode is still open.

The check mark, at the left side of the pop-up window that now opens, shows you which file will be sent. Tap on exactly the file that you want to send. All of your annotated (customised) editing layers can be sent, but not the original score file. Now tap on the “Send” icon, which can be found on the right of the row in which the file to be sent is located.

Then select one of the send options. If, for example, you select e-mail, your e-mail program will open and the file will already be attached to the e-mail. You can now send the file to one or more of your selected recipients.

Caution: The recipient can only open and use the file if he has first purchased the same original Henle Library App file. The recipient will immediately find the file that you created and sent in the form of an alternative copy of his original in his app – and is able to continue editing, renaming, deleting or sending it, as he desires, provided he has first opened your copy in his app.

You can exit the annotation mode by tapping on the “Done” field at top right. Only when you click “Done” will your current entries be saved. Your entire markup (supplements) is now stored in the edited layer/copy, which you can open again and change (see above) at any time.

 

Annotating (not all of these functions are available for Android)

If you are on a music page which you want to mark up with your own entries and you are in annotation mode (see above), you will find a wide range of corresponding options in the Henle Library App. These are set out individually below.

Annotations are principally made on a page-by-page and on a stave-by-stave basis. You can navigate around the page you wish to annotate by holding and dragging the music page with two (!) fingers. Using the “zoom-in” motion with two fingers (diverging or converging motion of the two fingers) you can, where necessary, enlarge or reduce the part of the score you want to annotate.

 

Writing (in various line widths and colours)

In the middle of the top row you will find seven different options for annotating the open music page. The first four (from the left) are your “pens” in various line widths – from very thin to marker pen. Tap with your finger (or iPencil) on the pen icon

that you wish to use; this causes it to become white-shaded and is now available to you. In the colour scale below, a white check mark shows in which colour the selected pen will write. Tapping your finger (or iPencil) on a different colour allows you to conveniently change it.

Using your finger or (recommended, because it is more precise) iPencil, you can now make your entries on the music score. You should initially keep your finger/pen on the screen at the place in the score that you want to annotate – this will open the corresponding annotation field = a stave is displayed (the greyed-out fields above and below this cannot be written in). Now make your amendments to the music score.

Caution: A little practise is required before you can work optimally. Because each time you lift your finger/pen off the screen you have drawn a clearly defined character (from a dot to a long line or curve). Compound characters, such as the two lines that make up the crescendo sign (top line, bottom line) or a forte “f”, represent two individual characters to the drawing program. Therefore, two steps are required if you wish to delete or change this compound character (see below). However, if you draw these two lines in a single motion (without lifting your finger/pen off the screen) the drawing program treats the result as just a single character.

 

Writing comments on the scores (text box)

In the middle of the top row you will find seven different options for annotating the open music page. The fifth option (from the left)

allows you to write free text on the scores using the keyboard. For this purpose you must open a text box in the exact place where you want to enter your notes. To do this, tap on the “T” icon; it becomes white-shaded and is now available to you as a tool. Now tap with your finger or iPencil in the place where you want the text to appear. “Start” appears in a grey font and a vertical line (cursor) flashes to show you where your text will begin. Now write your text using the keyboard that has simultaneously opened. Of course, in addition to text you can also use smileys etc.

 

Deleting (eraser)

In the middle of the top row you will find seven different options for annotating the open music page. The sixth option (from the left)

allows you to conveniently delete characters and text that have previously been added. To do this, tap on the eraser icon; it becomes white-shaded and is now available to you as a tool. Now tap with your finger or iPencil on any of the characters that you have annotated that you wish to delete again. If the character comprises several compound characters (e.g. two crossed lines), you must delete this character separately, step-by-step.

 

Highlighting annotations and text in order to move them or change their colour

In the middle of the top row you will find seven different options for annotating the open music page. The final option (from the left)

allows you to highlight one of the annotations you have made. This has two uses: the character shaded in this way can now be moved (e.g. more precisely positioned) within the great stave and its colour can also be changed. To do this, tap on the arrow icon; it becomes white-shaded and is now available to you as a tool. Now tap with your finger or iPencil on any of the characters that you have annotated, or on the text box (“T”) you created, that you wish to move or change colour. This simultaneously frames it with red dots to highlight it. Compound characters (e.g. two crossed lines) must each be separately highlighted and changed. To change the colour of the character framed in this way, tap your finger/iPencil on the desired colour, which you can find in the colour scale above. To move the character, hold the highlighted area with your finger or iPencil and drag it to the desired place within the great stave.

 

Using professional Henle music fonts (drag & drop)

If you do not wish to write/draw with your finger or iPencil, but would prefer to use a professional typeface for your personal annotations, a wide range of original Henle music fonts is available to you. You can find these characters in the bar highlighted in black at the bottom edge of the screen with the title highlighted in blue:

If you hold the black bar with your finger or iPencil and move it back and fore, you will see the complete set of freely usable signs. These begin (from the left) with the most frequently used dynamic signs, followed by fingering and bowing notations – and they continue through to the usual prefixes and embellishments.
Hold the symbol you wish to add to the printed music score with your finger or iPencil. Now you can drag this symbol – stave-by-stave – across the whole music page to any desired position and “drop” it there. Incidentally, the sign automatically adjusts to the correct font size (context) and is always displayed in the colour that you selected with the check mark in the colour scale above. Before “dragging & dropping” the sign you can also preselect its colour by tapping the scale. You can also retrospectively move, change the colour of and delete (see above) the newly added sign from the Henle font collection within the stave.

Requirements

In order to be able to conveniently jump back and fore between the individual instrumental part and the score you must have purchased both sales units of the same title › see here. These two titles must also be downloaded to your output device, i.e. just having them available in your “Library” is not sufficient.

 

Jumping back and fore between the part and the score

You are currently at any desired place in the individual part score. Tap, using one finger (not the iPencil), in the middle of the screen, exactly on the stave to which you wish to jump to in the score. (Jumps are not made to the precise bar, but to the precise stave or line). The note “Jump to full score bars” now appears, highlighted in white and in a frame, at the lower edge of the screen. Now tap on this field in order to change to the corresponding score display, i.e. to display the desired position in the associated title. Jumping back works in exactly the same manner.

In the case of solo concertos, for which the orchestral score and piano reduction are available, one jumps from the solo part to the orchestral score, provided it is available in the library. If only the piano reduction is available, the jump is directed there.

 

Less

Opening and closing body text (foreword etc.)

In order to be able to open and read all of the provided text sections, such as the foreword, afterword, edition information, › fingering information, sources, tables, etc., tap in the centre of the screen on any desired part of the score to open the menu bar at the top edge of the screen. If you now tap on the book icon

the “Companion content” window will open with all of the reading matter associated with this edition. Reading matter marked with an arrow > on the right edge is continuous reading text. Tapping on the corresponding row once again opens the text.

These texts contain cross-references to further texts or to explanatory comments which are hyperlinked with another text passage in the digital edition; the corresponding words are shaded and underlined in blue. Tapping on these shaded words either opens a window with the corresponding linked explanatory text, or one jumps to the respective body text. The open window can be closed by tapping outside it. Following a jump to a linked text you can return to the original text by clicking on the title at the top and selecting the corresponding section. The reading function is closed either by tapping on the “back arrow” < in the menu bar at top left – which takes you back to the music score from which you opened the reading material – or by tapping on the heading in the middle of the menu bar at the top – which takes you back to the selection window of the text menu.

 

About fingerings

Alternative fingerings and bowing notations over and above those found in the print edition can be found in the Henle Library › see here. If the fingerings in question are “historic” ones (such as for the piano sonatas of Mozart, Béla Bartók or Camille Saint-Saëns), then you will receive background information on the original source of the symbols we have adopted by tapping on “Fingering”.

 

Opening and closing the text comments directly attributable to the score

The Henle Library App makes it highly convenient for you to study all of the editorial background information on the actual music score, in the same way as the print edition. However, unlike the print edition, where such text comments are normally found in the appendix to the edition or in footnotes at the bottom of the page, it is only necessary to activate the “Score comments” function in the digital version.

This function is always found in the bottom row of the menu.

If you click the button to the right of it (this highlights it in blue and the score darkens for a moment), all parts of the music page, beneath which a text comment appears, are shaded with a blue field (triggering of this function may take a few seconds for more extensive scores). As soon as the music score has lightened again you will find that the associated explanatory print edition text appears beneath the places in the score that are shaded in blue.

A single tap on the field opens the window with the added text. In the process, the marked position is bordered in red and can be conveniently moved, with a finger or iPencil held down, for better readability.

As for the body text (see above), all words underlined and in a blue font are hyperlinked to corresponding in-depth texts. Tapping on such a text link opens the next window with the correspondingly linked text.

 

All such “pop-up” windows can be closed by tapping on a field outside them.

 

Output languages

The included written texts are displayed in accordance with the fundamental default settings (language preference) on your output device. The Henle Library App provides written texts in German and English. See the English texts for all language preferences except German.

Opening

On any music page of the app you will see, at the lower left edge of the screen alongside the › metronome, the microphone icon

Briefly tap it with your finger (iPencil) to open the recording and playback function. To close the recording pop-up window, even if recording or playback is active, tap on any part of the score outside the pop-up window.

 

Recording

To start a new recording tap on the “Start new Recording” field shaded in red. A window opens. As soon as you have entered an (as-yet unused) file name/title in the grey-shaded field (“New recording title”) – mandatory – and tapped on “Start” (blue-shaded field) your tablet PC microphone is automatically activated and the recording starts. You can identify that recording is active by the flashing, red-shaded microphone icon at bottom left and “Stop”.
Once you tap on this flashing field recording stops and it will be displayed in the grey-shaded field under the file name/title you previously entered. The duration of your recording is displayed in minutes/seconds to the right of the file name/title.

If you wish to make another recording tap on the “Start new recording” field shaded in red: see above.

 

Playing back

All of the recordings you have saved relating to the respective selected title are displayed row-by-row under the microphone icon, provided you have opened the music (page) of the title and are in the record menu. Tapping on the blue arrow icon to the left of the title name starts the recording. You can set the desired volume in that row of the window in which you see the loudspeaker icon at left/right;

by dragging the slider back and fore (with a finger or iPencil) you can change the volume. Caution: The actual volume naturally also depends upon the general volume setting on your device.
By holding and dragging the corresponding slider you can play back your recording at 5 different speeds (however, the recorded pitch remains the same!): at the original tempo (= default setting, centre “1x”); to the left of this in two slower tempi (0.5 x or 0.75 x) and to the right of this in two faster tempi (1.5 x or 2.0 x).

To the right of this tempo slider you will find the icon for the loop function.

Tapping on this (the icon is then shaded in blue) plays your recording back at the desired volume and speed in an endless loop. Tapping on the same icon stops the playback.

All of the files that you have recorded and saved using the Henle Library App, irrespective of the currently selected music page, can be found under “All recordings” above the red-shaded record button. Tapping on the row (to the right of which is an arrow >) opens your corresponding recording library. Each recording is assigned to the corresponding title, on the basis of which you made and saved your recording. Beneath the title (white field with title information) you can find your title names (grey-shaded fields) together with the corresponding recording duration in minutes and seconds. Tapping the blue arrow in the title bar starts the playback at the original tempo. The volume, tempo and loop function can be set by tapping on the corresponding icons, as described above.

You can navigate back to the music score from which you switched to the recording library by tapping on the blue-shaded arrow < at top left of the upper menu row next to the heading "All recordings”.

 

Deleting and renaming

You can individually delete your recordings by rapidly dragging to the left the grey-shaded field containing the name of the file to be deleted. Dragging the field slowly to the left reveals the text entry fields “Rename” and, shaded in red, “Delete”. Tapping on the red-shaded field deletes your recording permanently.

Renaming audio files functions in exactly the same way: You can individually rename your recordings by slowly dragging to the left the grey-shaded field containing the name of the file to be renamed. The two text entry fields “Rename” and, shaded in red, “Delete” appear. Tapping on the grey “Rename” field to the left causes the current title name that you entered to appear. You can now overwrite this name and tap on the blue-shaded “Rename” field to rename it.

Tapping on the “Cancel” field next to it cancels the delete/rename operation and takes you back to the music score.

You can also delete and rename your audio recordings from within "All recordings” (see above) in the same manner as from within the recordings relating to the music score.

 

Sending

You can also send all of your recordings individually as e-mail attachments. To do this, tap in the grey-shaded field of the file to be sent on the icon on the far right of the row.

A selection of apps and functions to which the “.m4a” audio file can be sent now opens. Should you send the file to another user of the app, the recipient can only open the file if he has downloaded the same Henle Library App title.

Turning the metronome on and off

On any music page of the app you will see, at the lower left edge of the screen, the metronome icon

Briefly tap it with your finger or the iPencil to open the metronome function. (Tapping and holding the icon starts the metronome with its current setting; › see here. To close the metronome pop-up window, even if the metronome is active, tap on any part of the score outside the pop-up window.

 

Setting the tempo

Select the desired tempo either by using your finger or the iPencil to drag the required MM number between MM = 40–208 into the central circle, or by selecting the desired figure underneath the range of Italian tempo marks shown. To do this, click on the down arrow

to the right of the currently set tempo indication. A single tap on the term causes the number to move into the circle with the average value of the selected tempo mark. You can go back to the original view by tapping on the up arrow, which is visible next to the selected tempo indication.

 

Starting, stopping and pausing the metronome

Tapping with your finger in the “Start” field starts the metronome in its beat generator function according to your preset tempo: you will hear the clicking and simultaneously see the synchronous blinking at the lowest part of the screen. You can set the click volume by dragging the slider in the bottom field

from very loud (e.g. for your fellow players to hear) through to muting it (where only the blinking can be seen). Caution: The actual volume naturally also depends upon the general volume setting on your device.

You can stop (or pause) the clicking and blinking by briefly tapping (with your finger or the iPencil) on the “Stop” field, or – provided you have closed the pop-up window for simultaneous playing – by tapping and holding the metronome icon

Using the same motion you can also restart the paused metronome at any time, without having to first open the pop-up window.

“Page turning”

[1] Tapping: You can go one music page backwards or forwards by tapping with one (!) finger on the right or left third of the screen.

[2] Swiping or pedal: Of course you can also turn the pages backwards or forwards by swiping with one finger or by using the Bluetooth pedal.

Jump (by movement, in 10-bar segments)

[1] Lower dots: At the lower edge of the screen you will see a sequence of dots; each visible dot represents a page in the score.

[2] Swiping: Swiping over the dots allows you to "browse" rapidly through the electronic edition.

[3] Bar indicator: On the lower right of the screen you will find the exact indication of where you currently are in the work:

 

[4] When you tap on these figures a navigation pop-up window opens. In this window you can either conveniently jump back and fore to each movement of the work, or you can jump to specific measures within the movement (always 10 measures at a time).

[5] Tap or hold: To do this tap on the Roman or Arabic numeral or hold the numeral in the circle and then drag the desired numeral into it using a left/right motion:

 

Jumping back at the repeat sign

[1] If there is a repeat sign in the piece and you want to jump back to the beginning of the repeated section, tap the screen using two (!) fingers (this does not work with the iPencil!). Irrespective of how many measures lie in between, you will then jump back to the beginning of the repeated section in a millisecond.

[2] This also works by double-tapping on your Bluetooth pedal.

 

“A – B – [A]”

“Da capo” sections that are not printed in full on the sheet music appear again in the app in the correct place. This allows you to simply continue playing without having to jump back to the beginning.

Creating playlists and adding titles

Playlist: Go to the “My Library” home page (field at lower centre). All of the titles that you have purchased are displayed in rows. To the right of each row is the playlist icon

If you wish to add this title to an existing playlist or one that is to be newly created, tap your finger (or iPencil) on the icon. The names of the playlists that you have already created are displayed in the pop-up window that now opens.

Creating a new playlist: If you want the title from which you opened the pop-up window to form the beginning of a newly created playlist, tap on the field “Create new playlist” which is shaded in blue. Now enter a new playlist name, tap “Create” and your selected title is immediately added to your new playlist.

Expanding an existing playlist: If you want to add the title from which you opened the pop-up window to an existing playlist, tap on the name of this playlist. The title will then be added to this playlist in last place. See › “Rearrange titles” if you wish to place the title in a different location in the playlist.

 

Displaying scores according to a playlist

Retrieving/displaying scores: Go to the “My Library” home page (field at lower centre). In the upper part of the screen, beneath the rows “Composer” and “Instrumentation”, you will find the row with the playlist icon and the term “Playlist”.

Tap on this row to display the playlists you have already created (names). If you want to display the titles in this playlist in order to be able to play them back in precisely the defined order, then tap on the list row from which the selection is to be made, and then on the first title displayed in the list (or on the title in the list with which you wish to begin). The first page of the selected music score opens. As soon as the final music page of the title is reached you will see a blue arrow at centre-right of the screen edge. Tap on this arrow and the sheet music for the next title appears in the order of your playlist. Of course, you can also use your finger (or iPencil) to swipe forwards one page or use the Bluetooth pedal to turn the page forwards.

 

Retrieving a playlist, rearranging and deleting titles within it

Retrieve: Go to the home page in “My Library” (field at lower centre). In the upper part of the screen, beneath the rows “Composer” and “Instrumentation”, you will find the row with the playlist icon and the term “Playlists”.

Tap on this row to display all of the playlists you have already created (names). If you want to see the individual music titles in one of these playlists – and the order in which they are arranged – tap on it.

Changing the order: If you want to see the content of this playlist and change the order of the titles within it, hold a finger (or the iPencil) on the title to be moved and drag the – now grey-shaded – title icon to the desired position.

 

Renaming a playlist

If you want to give an existing playlist a new name (title), use a finger (or iPencil) to rapidly drag the playlist row to the left. The options “Rename” and “Delete” appear. Tap on “Rename”. The “Rename playlist” pop-up window opens and you can enter the new name (title) into the grey row – the name must, however, be different from those of your other playlists. Then tap on the blue “Rename” field.

 

Deleting a playlist

If you want to completely delete an existing playlist (caution: all of the titles it contains will still remain in “My Library”), use a finger (or iPencil) to rapidly drag the playlist row to the left. The options “Rename” and “Delete” appear. Tap on “Delete”.

To do so, just tap on the screen to show the menu, then tap on the curtain symbol.

Now you are in “Performance mode”. All of the interactions accessible via the user interface are now turned off and all of the settings are fixed the way that you previously defined them. Layout, background colour, page layout, etc. cannot be changed anymore. The metronome, the microphone and the menu at the top of the screen are all hidden. This means that you can avoid accidentally touching them during the performance. However, page turns are still possible, as is jumping back at the repeat sign by tapping with two fingers. And your playlists will also work the way you previously defined them. This enables you to play several works during your concert one after the other in your prescribed order.

To exit performance mode, just tap on the middle of your screen. In the upper right-hand corner, you’ll then see the field “Exit performance mode”.

If you then tap on it, the performance mode function will be turned off and all of the functions will be available to you as usual.

Less
