Dear Reader,

“Are Urtext editions made for eternity?”

That would be wonderful. But in the following short talk you will discover how sometimes, for philological reasons, so-called revisions are indispensable if “Urtext” is to be taken seriously. I put together the talk with Norbert Müllemann, our Editor-in-Chief, and the two of us also presented sound and notational examples.

» See our video here [10 minutes, English]. I am sure you will be amazed at how much discussion material there is relating to this question!

With very best wishes

“Regenliedsonate” (Rain Sonata)
Johannes Brahms
Violin Sonata G major op. 78
Editor: Bernd Wiechert, Fingering: Martin Helmchen, Fingering and bowing for Violin: Frank Peter Zimmermann
Urtext Edition, paperbound
HN 1568

Brahms’s First Violin Sonata in G major is also known by the sobriquet “Regenliedsonate” (Rain Sonata) because its final movement quotes melodic motifs from his two songs “Regenlied” and “Nachklang” (which likewise has rain as its subject). The musical text of this revised Urtext edition is based on that of the newly completed volume of the New Brahms Complete Edition, which guarantees the highest degree of scholarly precision.

A while ago we invited you to send us video telling us about who you are, where you live and how you use our editions.

We’ve had some great responses from you, out of which – with regret – we have been able to select only a few. Several video clips have resulted, and here is the first. Enjoy!
